How to Prevent Phishing Attacks with Google's Alert Tool

How to Prevent Phishing Attacks with Google’s Alert Tool

Google has created a new security tool that’s aimed to thwart phishing attacks. The free Chrome extension keeps track of where you enter your Google account password, and will alert you when you’ve entered it somewhere other than accounts.google.com.
If you’re not familiar with phishing, its when a shady operation poses as a legitimate company like your bank, and sends you an email, that looks like the real deal, and it directs you to a site that looks equally legit. Then has you enter in sensitive personal information such as your account number, password, or social security number.
For instance, you could get an email from some third-party claiming to be Google, the email looks legit, with the company logo, and professional language, and it gives you a link where you need to change your password. When you click that link, instead of going to the real Google, it goes to a nefarious site that steals your information.
This tool will alert you when your Gmail or Google for Work password is entered anywhere other than account.google.com. It also tried to detect fake Google sign-in pages and alert you before you enter your password.

Google Alert Chrome Extension

Setting this up is a piece of cake, and does add an extra layer of security to your account data. Download the Password Alert extension from the Chrome Web Store.

After it installs, you’ll be prompted to enter your Google account credentials. After that, it will start monitoring where you enter your Google account, and help prevent phishing attacks before it’s too late.
For more information, you can read the full FAQ page here.

Remember, this is an extra tool to help keep your Google account protected, but for the best protection of your account, make sure and enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).

This new Gmail redesigned offers tabs where different type of emails land, such as Primary tab is your main inbox where emails from people you frequently interact with, lands. Social tab gets all the notification emails from social networking websites. Promotional will contain deals, offers from the newsletter you’ve opted in for.

I am using it right now and I can say it’s pretty accurate in recognizing emails and putting them in tabs. The emails which you feel belong to the other tab, can be dragged to the other one asking you to do this for other such emails in future.
Multiple inboxes for email can confuse people, this is why I wasn’t using Gmail Priority. Now, this offering may help few people who want to stay organized but are not interested in digging deep to get more control over emails.
Filters and Labels, which are pretty useful and I have been using them to organize my emails. These two features are enough to keep the clutter away from your inbox. But having more choices doesn’t hurt.

Use Gmail Offline

How To Use Gmail Offline

Work must go on even when there is slight interruption in internet connection or even when offline. So, how about accessing, reading and replying to emails offline or when there is no internet connectivity. This is possible using a Chrome web store app called Gmail Offline and it does what its name says.
What it allows:

  1. Access Gmail inbox offline
  2. Read Emails
  3. Reply email
  4. Search and
  5. Archive

How to Access Gmail Offline

Install Gmail Offline from Web store and icon will appear in Apps tab of Chrome web browser. On first use, this app will ask you to add an account. Now, it will try to synchronize emails or I should say download them from Gmail servers. By default, app is set to sync emails from last 2 weeks.
Interface of the app is different from the regular Gmail UI but it is easy to interact. It is HTML5-powered app based on the Gmail web app for tablets, which was built to function with or without web access. Email list and labels are shown on left column whereas preview is on right side.

Operation buttons are given at the top from where you can Delete, Mark as Read, Archive, Compose new email and so on.
This is all about work and productivity but if Internet connection isn’t available for longer duration of time, then there are other interesting things to do offline.

How Does Gmail Work Offline

You may be wondering how does email reach the person when I send it without connecting to internet. Actually, email isn’t sent when you press Send button offline. That operation is queued and whenever computer is connected to Internet, app detects it and processes the queue automatically. In other words, data connectivity is needed to process online operations.
Then what’s the use? Motive of Gmail offline app is- “Your work shouldn’t stop when Internet stops working”. You can be productive from anywhere anytime even when offline. Good example would be working while on a long duration flight journey. Perfect for people who are always on the move with their netbook.
Chrome browser must always keep running (in background) – To check availability of Internet connectivity continuously, Gmail Offline must be ON always and hence the browser. After installing this app, even if you close Google Chrome window, it will continue to run in background. You may Exit the browser using the tray icon besides windows clock.

It means around 132 MB of Memory will be always in use if you want to use Gmail Offline.

You may also check out Google Calender or Google Docs Offline app from Webstore.
Just like Gmail, there are other products too like, you can even download Google maps for offline use. Do you prefer working offline?

Unable To Connect Gmail Account in Windows 8 Mail App

Fix “Unable To Connect” Error  While Adding Gmail Account in Windows 8 Mail App

Windows 8 has inbuilt Mail App which by default adds Live account but also gives option to add other Email accounts too. Here, we will learn how to configure Google account with Metro Mail, People and Calender app.

How to Add Gmail in Windows 8 Mail app?

  1. Open Mail app and move your cursor to right side.
  2. Click on Settings icon (Gear).
  3. Click on Accounts >> Add Account >> Google Account
  4. Enter Google Account Credentials (Username and Password) to Sign in.
If everything goes correct, it will automatically start syncing mails from Gmail. In some case, you may get an error “Unable to Connect. Ensure Information entered is correct”

How to Fix Unable to Connect Error in Windows 8 Mail app

There are 3 possible solutions to fix it.
A. Restart After Windows Update - After installing Windows 8, updates do get downloaded automatically but aren’t installed actually. This was the problem in my case which caused Google account adding error.
Fixing this is actually easy, you just have to install and restart Windows 8.
  1. Go to Homescreen (Press Windows button)
  2. Right click and click on “Show all Apps” icon on bottom right.
  3. List of Apps will open and on this screen, move cursor to right side and click on “Search icon” (Magnifying Glass)
  4. Type “Windows Update” and Settings will open.
  5. Here, click on “Update and Restart” button.
Another possible solutions are:
B. Try using @googlemail.com instead of @gmail.com while entering Username to sign in as suggested by user in a forum.
C. Generate Application Specific Password
If you have enabled 2 step verification on Google account then you need to generate new password for logging in.
  1. Go to Google Account Security Settings
  2. Click “Edit” in front of “2 Step Verification”.
  3. Manage Application Specific Passwords.
  4. Generate New Password and use this password to login Windows 8 Mail app.
